Broad St. Bullies

The Broad St. Bullies are a Richmond, VA, cycling group that holds weekly ride-outs, often drawing hundreds of participants. This ethnographic study, conducted by a graduate student researcher, aims to describe the group’s structure and practices in order to understand how it impacts participants.

This research is an ethnographic study of the Broad St. Bullies, utilizing participant observations and in-depth interviews to develop an understanding of how the group impacts its participants and builds solidarity and cohesion through the processes inherent to ride-outs. Key to this study is the understanding that Broad St. Bullies ride-outs are a form of carnival, in that they transgress social norms, dissolve social boundaries, provide a space for self-expression and creativity, and generate an atmosphere of excitement and unity.
